Carroll Bogert will assume the role of Chief Executive Officer at THE CITY, the nonprofit news outlet in New York City, effective October 8. She succeeds Executive Director Nic Dawes, who will remain a strategic advisor to the organization through the end of the year.
Bogert, a veteran leader in journalism and the nonprofit sector, previously served as President of The Marshall Project, the Pulitzer Prize winning newsroom covering the criminal justice system. During her tenure, The Marshall Project’s budget quadrupled from $4 million to nearly $18 million. Its staff expanded from 24 to more than 80, and it earned two Pulitzer Prizes, alongside multiple other top journalist honors.
“We are delighted to have Carroll joining us in this leadership role,” said Sarah Bartlett, co-chair of the board and Dean Emerita of the Craig Newmark Graduate School of Journalism. “She brings extensive journalism experience as well as a deep understanding of how to build support for nonprofit news. We feel very fortunate to have her on our team.”
“THE CITY is an essential institution holding New York City officials to account,” said Bogert. “Amid the turmoil of national politics, local media must hold fast to what makes journalism essential in a democracy: exposing wrongdoing, letting powerful people know they’re being watched and helping citizens navigate the world they live in.
“Rebuilding the infrastructure of local news in our country is an urgent priority — and a critical part of defending democracy,” added Bogert. “I’m honored to play a part.”
Since it began publishing in 2019, THE CITY has exposed government corruption leading to resignations of multiple state and city officials. Its reporting has prompted new laws and policies protecting workers, eliminating fraud and requiring greater transparency.
It has won several prestigious journalism prizes, from the Edward R. Murrow award to laurels from the New York Press Club, the Silurians, the Online News Association and the Deadline Club.
“The board of directors of THE CITY is grateful for Nic’s deep dedication and commitment to THE CITY and for building engagement and impact,” said Jamie Alter Lynton, co-chair of the board. During Dawes’ tenure, which began in 2021, THE CITY diversified its funding base and expanded its membership. In 2025 to date, its audience grew by more than 50%, surpassing one million readers monthly across its platforms.

Before joining The Marshall Project in 2016, Bogert served as Deputy Executive Director at Human Rights Watch, a nongovernmental organization defending human rights globally. She was previously a correspondent and editor for Newsweek magazine in China, Southeast Asia, and the former Soviet Union.
