IMPACT: THE CRUNCH HEARD ROUND THE WORLD

Adams Advisor Handed a CITY Reporter Cash Stuffed in a Bag of Potato Chips

August 20, 2025

THE CITY received international attention when, after a campaign event in August, Eric Adams ally Winnie Greco handed one of our reporters an envelope of cash stuffed in a bag of potato chips. We turned the bag over to the Department of Investigation immediately, who looped in additional law enforcement already investigating Greco and other Adams officials.

The Adams campaign immediately suspended Greco following questions from THE CITY about her attempted bribe.

Before long, our article ricocheted around the world. National outlets — from The New York Times to NBC to the New Yorker to the late-night comedy shows — covered the story. Our articles on the debacle received more than 280,000 views, and stories about “Chipgate” appeared in 33 countries, in more than seven languages. Most importantly, Greco remains under investigation.
