Hub for Food Delivery Workers Finally Opens

Sometimes impact takes patience. THE CITY was the first outlet to report on the idea of a place for delivery workers to rest and recharge – and it finally is becoming a reality five years later. 

The proposal for a Deliverista Hub came originally from one delivery worker during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2021, officials finally pledged to build a space for delivery workers to charge their e-bikes and phones, make repairs and take shelter from the heat and cold. 

It took five years for an abandoned newsstand near City Hall to be renovated for this purpose. In that time, THE CITY wrote more than 30 stories calling to attention delivery workers’ poor pay, grueling work conditions and demands for equitable treatment. 
The charging hubs are the latest in a string of victories for Los Deliveristas Unidos, a group formed to organize and advocate for delivery workers, including a landmark minimum pay rate.
